Wyedean Canoe Club has been in existence for over three decades. It is a family club with the emphasis on fun. The atmosphere within the club is very informal and its success relies on all members talking to each other.

Being water based sport, often in small groups, this is easier said than done. It is, therefore important that if you are new to the club and you want to get the most out of it, introduce yourself to existing members and let them know what aspects of the sport you are interested in.

During British Summer Time (April to October) the Club meets on Thursday evenings at Symonds Yat East at about 6-15 pm. At these sessions members paddle for pleasure, try new boats, learn new skills or provide tuition. These are usually followed with an informal gathering in the local hostelry, The Saracens Head Inn.

Our boats may not be the latest, shiny up to the minute craft but just imagine the number of paddlers who have squeezed their behinds in and taken their first tentative paddle. If these boats could only tell their stories....

Anyone who has bought a boat will know they aren't cheap. Add in a bouyancy aid, helmet and a paddle, and the club might have to spend the equivalent of 10-15 years of someone's membership to get just one person onto the water in a second hand boat. It is something to be proud of, and thanks to the hard work and money of current and previous members, that we are able to provide so many boats for people to use for free on club nights.

    HIGH WATER MARKS SUMMERS RETURN!

Welcome to April’s newsletter. Hopefully, by the time you get this, many of you would have started your summer paddling on Thursday evenings on the Yat. The committee would like to point out the high water level on the first coaching evening was beyond their control, and will meet with the Weather Sub-committee, The River level working party, the Wetness intensity preservation group and the Storm Cloud Discussion forum to negotiate the weather for next Thursday.
The courses will hopefully be on the water next week, and those of us not on courses will soon be back to normal, and be playing on the rapids, moaning about water levels, dodging Canadian canoes, and chatting in the eddies whilst waiting for the ‘Song of the Chips’ to call us to the pub.

The club is always looking for improvements in the way we deliver our coaching on club nights. After a lot of thought and a review with the coaches of what we have provided over the past two years we think that members would benefit from an approach that will provide a bit more consistency. This will mean a few changes on Thursday nights:
    • We will provide a series of BCU Star Award courses as outlined below. They will be based around the BCU courses, but the emphasis will still be on fun. Most of all, we hope to be able to have the same coaches running the courses each week so we can really help you progress.
    • We are going to nominate 2 experienced paddlers to be available on the rapids for any questions. You will be able to spot them wearing red bibs over their kit.
    • If there are spare coaches available, we will run further ad hoc sessions for people who want coaching. These will typically be for an hour and will depend on what people need on the night.

If you are wondering why in the world you should consider Twitter, here are a couple of reasons:
This is one of the few technologies that actually contributes to community-building. In today’s busy world, it’s difficult to keep up with others. Twitter makes it easy—and fun.
In a sense Twitter is a universal text messaging system. You can broadcast to all of your “followers” or send a direct message to just one.

Twitter is a great way to get in touch with us, You can ask me a ...
